Record low number of burglaries in 2019 – but Danes' burglary protection can be improved
Every year, thousands of Danes experience burglaries in their private homes and businesses. In 2019, the police received no less than 24,553 reports of burglaries in private homes. However, this is a significant decrease compared to previous years. But the curve needs to go even further down!
Still a large number of burglaries in Denmark
The number of burglaries in private homes is relatively high in Denmark. However, 2019 has seen a record low compared to previous years, with a 14.6% decrease compared to the previous year. So things are moving in the right direction, but the average number of burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants is around 42, which is far too high.
However, some municipalities are much more vulnerable than others. Figures from Statistics Denmark show that the 10 most affected municipalities actually account for 1/3 of the total number of burglaries.
It will probably come as no surprise to many that the largest proportion of burglaries are committed in larger cities, but that does not mean that smaller municipalities are not part of the burglary statistics. However, it is worth noting that six of the top ten municipalities most affected by burglary are located north of Copenhagen.
1. Horsholm
105 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
2. Rudersdal
103 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
3. Dragør
103 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
4. Gentofte
88 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
5. Gladsaxe
83 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
6. Lolland
78 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
7. Allerød
77 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
8. Helsingor
72 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
9. Lyngby-Taarbæk
72 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
10. Herlev
71 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
National average:
42 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants
Despite a lower number of burglaries in 2019, we Danes need to get better at securing our homes. That is the key to avoiding burglaries, believes Britt Wendelboe from Bo Trygt.
Burglary protection makes it more difficult for thieves
According to Britt Wendelboe from Bo Trygt, the low number of burglaries in private homes in 2019 is mainly due to the fact that Danes have become better at burglar-proof their homes.
To Berlingske, she says, among other things: "It helps to strengthen the resilience of the house, i.e. windows and doors, so that it takes time and makes noise to get in. It also helps to install outdoor light sensors. That way, the neighbors will notice too.”.
So, making your home burglar-proof with new locks, window locks, etc. has a positive effect on burglary statistics.

A large proportion of burglaries are committed through windows, so it is a good idea to install window locks to ensure your safety.
Know the thief's pattern
As a locksmith, you often need to put yourself in the thief's shoes when securing homes against burglary. This is necessary in order to provide the best possible protection against light-fingered individuals.
That's why it's good to know the thief's pattern:
Thieves often strike during the winter months and holiday periods.
The thief either strikes at the beginning of a working day or in the early evening hours.
The capital accounts for the largest share of burglaries
Homes with higher property valuations have a higher risk of burglary
1/3 of burglaries in homes occur in the following month in another home in the immediate area.
The thief travels an average of 41 km to the burglary address
Burglary in apartments typically occurs on the ground floor.

Danish companies are also vulnerable to theft and burglary. Security systems such as fog alarms, DNA spray, and similar devices are effective once the thief is already inside, but there are also a number of methods for keeping thieves out. These include e.g., when using electronic access control, where the company gains full control over who comes and goes – in other words, it allows them to monitor all traffic in the building. The system also makes it easy to customize each employee's personal options and to take into account changes in personnel and the like, as changes can easily be made on a PC. The access control system can also be integrated with other security systems to provide a complete and comprehensive solution.

Fog protection ensures that when an alarm is triggered, the room is filled with a dense fog within seconds, making the thief's work impossible.
Burglary protection is your best weapon
Inadequate burglary protection is one of the main reasons why Danish homes rank at the very top of the European burglary statistics. Although the burglary rate is decreasing, it is still very high compared to the rest of Europe. Unfortunately, Denmark clearly ranks first in terms of the number of burglaries per capita. Therefore, the message is clear – get your home burglar-proof!
